Pages from a favourite old book flutter to the floor. Tattered and worn, the small print beginning to merge with the colour of the paper - no longer white and crisp, but soft and beautiful - the pages resemble the tattered and faded wings of a dying butterfly. A writer goes through a metamorphosis not unlike the process that a butterfly experiences. From egg to larva, caterpillar to chrysalis, finally to emerge from the pod, wings crumpled until the sun dries them and the butterfly is able to fly, the writer’s ideas resemble the larval stage, the writing mirrors the appetite of the voracious caterpillar, until new, fresh and clean, its cover pristine, the book finds its way to the reader. A well used book completes a full circle, the spine disintegrates, pages fall out. Butterfly Factory addresses the idea of repetition, art versus craft, and the oft-discussed possibility of the disappearance of the printed paper book in light of the emerging use of electronic books.
